Not being funny, didn’t we used to laugh?
An ode to when the internet was less shit.
I really hope this isn’t just a me thing.
I vividly remember finding videos on the internet gut wrenchingly hilarious. Vines - seven second clips - used to make my friends and I cry with laughter. Then just the mere mention of an excerpt from one was enough to inspire a raucous fit of giggles, impossible to quench until the last ounce had been squeezed out.
Perhaps it’s just me getting older? But I think it’s something sadder.
The internet is now just one big selling machine, isn’t it?
Even if it’s not an ad, it’s an ad.
No-one’s just trying to be entertaining anymore. They want to entertain…with a brand deal opportunity. Or entertain…to inspire that juicy juicy sale.
Or perhaps it's like my gran always says. Only boring people get bored. Maybe that’s just who I am now.
I don’t know what the antidote is, but I’m pretty certain we aren’t going to find it on our screens.
What do you reckon? Shall we try to make the internet a more fun place together? Or perhaps we should unplug it and go old school, down the pub?
